In 1920 Alfred Vardalis was hired as a policeman for the Kenilworth Police department. In 1922 he was appointed as Kenilworth's first Police Chief.
One of Officer Vardalis's most noteworthy deeds of the department was on the night of February 25th, 1921. The "Union County Bandits" attempted to rob the midnight Morris Avenue Trolley, near Kean College. Officer Vardalis traced the bandits to a home, cornered them and caused them to surrender. He was cited for bravery by the State and County.
