The M15 General Officer's Pistol was developed by the U.S. Army's Rock Island Arsenal to replace the aging Colt 1903 and 1908 pocket Hammerless pistols.  It was adopted in 1972 and would be issued until 1981.  A total of 1,004 of these pistols were produced.

General Fiato began his military career as an enlisted man with Headquarters  and Headquarters detachment, New York Army National Guard on February 28th, 1950.  He attended the State Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a second lieutenant of Infantry on September 20th, 1953.  He was assigned as a Platoon Leader in Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division, New York Army National Guard.

General Fiato was mobilized into federal service in connection with the U.S. Postal Strike in March 1970.  He was promoted and federal recognized as Colonel on July 21st, 1971.
