This Colt M1911 was was shipped to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for Naval use on February 11, 1918 in a shipment of 1,600 pistols.
Not only is it a Navy issue Colt, but it is one of the few pistols accepted by JMG (John M. Gilbert). Major John M. Gilbert was the Army Inspector of Ordnance from August 10th 1917 - March 29th 1918.
It is one of the last Colts finished by the Brushed Blue process before they went to the so called Black Army finish.. It falls into the serial number batch that was issued to the USS CALIFORNIA, although there is no direct documentary evidence of this.
